Incontinence care
The bladder is a hollow muscle that stores urine produced by the kidneys; the sphincter is a muscle that can be controlled by will, it contracts to allow continence during the bladder filling phase and relaxes to allow bladder emptying.
Everything gets complicated when there is no longer good coordination between the bladder and the sphincter.
Anal continence is achieved mainly by the permanent and involuntary contraction of the internal sphincter of the anus (made of smooth fibers) which is relayed by the contraction of the external sphincter (striated fibers) during the desire. Anal incontinence is a disorder of these two continence muscles.
